Why VideoMatch focuses on simple 1v1 video chat
The idea is small on purpose: press a button, be face to face with a stranger, and be able to leave without ceremony.
Almost every product in this category eventually drifts. It adds profiles, then a feed, then rooms with audiences, then a currency you need before anything interesting happens. Each step makes the product easier to monetise and worse at the one job people showed up for. VideoMatch is an attempt to hold the line: a private 1v1 call with a stranger, matched in about 0.8 seconds, free at the parts that matter.
What we do spend effort on is unglamorous: the matcher, the moderation stack, and live caption translation. Fast matching is what makes skipping cheap, and cheap skipping is what lets you keep going until a conversation is actually worth having. Moderation is what keeps the worst one percent from defining the experience for everyone else — the details are in the Safety Center. Translation is what stops a match in Istanbul or São Paulo from dying in the first ten seconds.
Four things we deliberately left out
No feed
There is nothing to scroll here. You either talk to a person or you close the tab — we would rather you did the first thing and then left.
No group rooms
Rooms are easier to fill and easier to monetise, and they turn every conversation into a performance. Every match here is strictly two people.
No paywall on the actual product
Matching, the call and unlimited skipping are free. If we ever put those behind a payment, the thing we built stops being the thing we described.

How do you make money if it is free?
Optional extras: precision filters (a specific country, for example) and gifts. The free random video chat is the whole product, not a trial of it.
Is this a dating app?
Not exactly. Some matches turn into easygoing video dating and that is fine, but there are no swipes, no profiles to rank and no matchmaking promises. It is a conversation service first.
